I still have no idea why they didn't just make the code & HW for the XDS100, XDS110 work to also program MSP430 parts at least the ones with two wire SBW programming interfaces.

That's potentially handy for the free CCS version. You can get an XDS110 debugger that's capable of programming the devkit's integrated device (of course) but also can be switched over to allow programming / debugging external boards/parts (after some jumper changes etc.) on a couple of their devkits like some basic models of the MSP432 and CC2650 kits IIRC. The most popular versions of the software are 3.1 and 2.0. Eclipse.exe is the most frequent filename for this programs installer. The program belongs to Photo & Graphics Tools. Code Composer Essentials is compatible with Windows XP/7 environment, 32-bit version. Actually, even more disappointing, IIRC Z-STACK even for their ARM and MSP processors might be tied only to the commercial IAR toolchain and not supported under any CCS version. Code Composer Essentials 3.1 is free to download from our software library. A disappointing thing (to me) is that TI has 8051 series cores in a lot of their older Chipcon derived parts that aren't supported at all by the CCS compiler or the XDS1xx / MSP-FET series program & debug interfaces so for those you're stuck using IAR 8051 professional compiler and the CC-DEBUGGER interface or something like that, and to further complictate matters their own "available in binary library only form" software for these like Z-STACK is only available in IAR specific library form so there's just no way to use them with CCS or anything else.

There are a few models of TI IC (various DSPs and such) that don't support XDS1xx series debug / programming interfaces but instead require one of their higher end XDS interfaces or some 3rd party debug / programming tool that CCS supports so for those there's a benefit in getting this more full version of CCS. for larger FLASH & RAM & higher performance options. I guess now that there are MSP430s with bigger flash sizes more commonly available I suppose it's more possible to run into code size limits on that platform but then I've not had that problem and have turned to other ICs like PSOC 5, TI Stellaris / TIVA / MSP432, STM32Fx, et. But, yes, for general hobbyist purposes there's often fairly little difference between the "always free" version of CCS and the promo one here, particularly if you're using an XDS100 or XDS110 interface to program / debug your board since the free XDS1xx series license lets you do most everything in terms of debug & programming as well as compiling for supported ICs which are fairly numerous.

I was wondering if I'd be able get the free upgrade from the semi-full version of CCS4 to CCS6 based on their "and upgrades are now free" policy but I guess I don't have to worry about that so much now.
